This may be a silly and insensitive question, but why do you want to save it?

a) I love that store:
- it has nice low prices, and
- it has lots of things I eat.

b) It is close to my house.

c) It is close to many other people's houses.

d) Some of those people are really going to have a hard time getting to other stores.

I guess those are good reasons ;) I was curious if it was a convenience thing or a jobs thing or perhaps something else.

It's not a jobs thing.

Last time I was there, the cashier told me she was happy Loeb is pulling out. After seven years, she's sick of the place and ready to try some other kind of work.

It was never a great store, but it was infinitely better than NO grocery store in the neighbourhood.

I live close to Bayswater and the closest thing is the Asian grocery store on Somerset. I am not Asian and feel that I am not served properly whenever I walk into that store. That's why I go to Loeb. Now that Loeb is closing, I have to take the #2 to get my groceries at Hartman's or the other Loeb closer to Island Park. Or eat Vietnamese takeout every day which is good but you can't do that on a daily basis.

Somerset West needs a good grocery store with affordable prices, not just convenience stores. Sad that it is going. Maybe they should tear down that ugly City Centre building and build a Westboro-type Loblaws there?

Word on the street (from my friends who live on Eccles) is that the building has some serious structural problems, and that's part of the reason it's closing.

I can't help but think part of it is demographics. Hardly the toniest neighbourhood we live in, and I wonder how much Loeb gets out of being here?

I do hope another grocery store goes in that spot. Maybe one with produce that's a little fresher.
